How net-to-gross salary calculation works
A target net salary cannot be divided by one fixed percentage because ceilings and progressive tax create breakpoints.
Rules version LB-2026.3 · Reviewed 3 September 2026
Why there is no single multiplier
Employee NSSF is percentage-based until its ceiling. Income tax uses annual allowances and progressive bands. Crossing either threshold changes the marginal deduction rate, so “net divided by 90%” is not reliable.
Salary Ledger's method
- Start with the target monthly net before statutory cash benefits.
- Test a possible gross salary through the full gross-to-net engine.
- Raise or lower the gross amount depending on the resulting net.
- Repeat until the computed net matches the target to a fraction of a pound.
Important target definitionNet-to-gross targets salary after employee NSSF and income tax, before transportation and NSSF family benefits.
How to verify the answer
Take the displayed gross salary and run it through gross-to-net using the same spouse, children and currency settings. The resulting net-before-benefits should match the original target, allowing only the displayed rounding.
